Welcome to the Rough Rider Association
The Rough Rider Association (RRA) consists of cowboys, cowgirls, and rodeo stock contractors throughout North Dakota. RRA was formed in the late 70’s by a small group of rodeo contestants & stock contractors
Dale Chilson, who was announcing many of those early rodeos, started pushing the organization to change its name from the Amateur Rodeo Association, which admittedly held some limiting connotations, to something a little more catchy, to a name a little more in keeping with the state and the spirit of the association. Chilson suggested the Roughrider Rodeo Association, and that was adopted after the 1980 season. Chilson also got a graphic designer to produce an association image, which is still in use.
Many generations of North Dakota cowboys and cowgirls have been members of the RRA thus receiving the opportunity to make Rodeo a family affair, hence the motto “A Family Way To Rodeo”.
